This course is designed to empower high school students to take charge of and set a path for their future. It will also prepare them to graduate with marketable skills and real-world work connection. The Department of Labor predicts that 8 of the 20 fastest growing occupations are in healthcare service. The need for healthcare professionals in the U.S. is expected to increase 27% by the year 2014. The course allows students to recognize their unique abilities relating to healthcare careers and assists them to find a pathway to success. Students enrolled in the Medical Terminology course will use phonetic pronunciation and word-building to learn the language of medicine. They will learn to understand and communicate using the medical words and abbreviations needed in a healthcare career. The course will use an integrated approach that will allow students to master medical terminology while gaining knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the disease process. Credits for successful completion of this program may be articulated to South Dakota Technical Institutes as stated in the South Dakota Articulation Agreement State Guidelines.
